A few weeks ago, after we returned from our summer away, the boys and I were going a little stir crazy. It was one of those weeks that was unbearably hot and we didn’t have anything on the agenda and I could tell that we all needed a little change of scenery. Usually we head to my parent’s house in California for a few weeks at the end of August, but this year we thought it would be best to do some mini-trips a little closer to home so we could avoid the whole back to school craziness that tends to ensue when we get back from these long trips.
About a year ago I blogged about my desire to visit Mass MOCA with the boys, and specifically the new hotel TOURISTS that was opening in North Adams, and as luck would have it the hotel had opened a week before I thought to look into it. When I found that out I immediately booked a room for two nights and the next day we made the three hour trip up to the Berkshires. Luckily we had some friends that had recently been to the Mass MOCA, and the surrounding area a few weeks before, so I was able to get their “must see” recommendations prior to our quick exit. I had very low expectations going into to the trip and in the end it turned out to be one of the best things we did all summer.
TOURISTS is a hotel that is inspired by the classic American roadside motor lodge, set on the banks of the Hoosic River in the Berkshires city of North Adams. The 48-room property was created using common organic materials and is home to woodland trails, riverbank vistas, sculptural installations and more. My boys absolutely loved spending time at the property and in the swimming pool, and I spent the entire trip ooohhhing and aweing over the incredible, modern design.
Everything at the hotel is so well thought out and the highlight of the trip for me was spending afternoons in the welcoming lobby, playing cards with the boys while I had one of my beloved bourbon Old Fashions (they make the best I’ve ever had), snacking on local cheeses, nuts, and olives. If that sounds like a stereotypical Berkshires thing to do, it was, and it was just about as heavenly as it sounds. Mass MOCA is a few minutes down the road and we spent most of our day there (and we LOVED it) but truthfully we all couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel because it was that good! In January, my husband and I have our fifteen year wedding anniversary and we are thinking of booking a trip back to this incredible place. I know it would probably be more romantic if it were just the two of us, but I’m pretty sure the boys would never let us live it down as they both say it is one of their favorite hotels… ever!
If you are looking for a little New England getaway, I can’t say enough great things about TOURISTS. We feel so lucky that we were able to be one of the first guests in this hotel and I can guarantee that we will be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Xx
