Dream Designer | Architect: Mason St.Peter
Our house in Costa Rica, is definitely a dream for my husband and I. It's something that we always talked about wanting, but it's also something that we never actually thought we would be able to make happen. The actual house that we are building? Well, that house is most definitely my dream. Growing up in Southern California, I have always wanted a Spanish style home, and one that has a modern spin on it? All the better in my book. While my husband is certainly going to love our home, I often recognize that this house isn't actually his dream house as much as it is mine. Why? In my husband's dreams a house is made of one thing, and one thing only... wood.
When I say a wood house, I mean a WOOD house. My husband is an outdoorsman and thinks of himself as a waterman, and if he had his way he would be living in a tree house on some remote island in the South Pacific. Instead he has us, and as much as we can handle the elements, Swiss Family Robinson we are not. When we were discussing the design for the Costa House, of course he suggested that it be made strictly of wood, but given that we are located on the top of a hill and open to all the elements (intense sun, rain, and wind) we quickly realized that the home we build would have to be more sturdy, thus stucco and glass were the materials we chose.
The dream of course doesn't die with this build and I often think that if we ever chose to leave our condo we would try to find a way to build a wood house right here in Cambridge. Our neighborhood is certainly funky enough for it and since we are speaking of dreams, there is no question that the man that I would want to help with the renovation would be none other than Mason St. Peter.
St. Peter is truly a genius when it comes to working with wood and I often find myself stalking his portfolio for inspiration. I first fell in love with his work when I saw the staircase he created above (I mean, GAH!!!!!!) which led me to all his past projects, where I found that each one was more creative an unique than the last. Below you will find a few of my favorite spaces that he has created, and you know that so much of the interior of the Costa house is inspired by his work- what can I say, he's amazing!
Even if it's not a tree house you desire, you have to admire what this man can create out of a simple piece of wood. I'm not sure if my husband's dream of an all wood house will ever come to fruition, but you know if we ever get that opportunity I will do my best to get my dream designer / architect Mason St. Peter at the helm! Xx
