About a year and a half ago, I had grown incredibly tired of my workout routine. Annoyed could be a better word, but basically I was just kind of sick of going from class to class, hearing one motivational line after another and feeling like I was getting fitter in a physical sense, but mentally I wasn't gaining anything from the experience. Basically, I was bored with all the options around and I didn't feel like any of them were really pushing me to my limit. I also began to have back problems for the first time and I was sure it was related to all the jumping / spinning that I was doing for my workouts.
I was explaining this to one of my dear friends when debating if I should quit my gym and she asked if I had ever tried hot yoga. My friend had just started going and thought it might be something that was right up my alley. While I had practiced yoga for years, I never really became devoted to it and I was very intrigued by the idea of sweating it out in a very hot room. A went a few times and really enjoyed the workout (and the sweat- OMG!) and it was much harder than anything I had done before. I quit my gym, worked it into my routine, and figured that this was as good as exercise could get.
And then Tara Morris came along.
This Summer, Tara took over my yoga class and even before my first class in the fall I had heard that she was amazing. I was a little hesitant because I hate change, but I was trying to be open. I was assured that I would really connect with her, but I have to admit I was still doubtful going in. Five minutes into class I was forever converted and the only way that I can describe her class to people is that it is a LIFE CHANGING experience.
I have been so lucky to spend the last eight months in the studio with Tara, twice a week, and those classes have become the thing my entire week (life) revolves around. I no longer work out anywhere else and I really can't put into words how much this single class has changed my life. I went in looking for a great workout and I've found that, but in addition I also discovered an experience that is so authentic, I absolutely can't imagine my week without it.
There is so much to say about Tara. She is honest, she is raw, and she is so very real. Her views on fitness and life come from a place of truth (her mother has lived with Parkinson's Disease for 24 years) and she is very open about how that has affected her. When Tara tells you to move because you can, she means it. When she tells you to think about how lucky you are, you want to fall to your knees in gratitude. She offers so much perspective, authenticity, and strength, and she pushes you to your edge just so you can finally find out where it is. Her class has become a metaphor for my life, and I feel like I have grown so much as a person in this last year, and I really owe it all to her.
So here is the rub.
I found this amazing class. Mentally and physically it has changed me. I now need it to get through my week. I have stopped doing any other exercise except for this class. I protect my Monday / Thursdays with everything I can because I just don't want to miss a day. So, what happens when there is a blizzard, or school vacation, or when we are traveling? You guys, there was a period where I couldn't go for two weeks and I felt like I was spiraling. I considered begging Tara to do a FaceTime class during our last snowstorm just so I could get my mind straight and right before I did she made a big announcement... she made a video!
I don't know if it's possible for your life changing event to have a life changing moment, but if there is, this was it. Now, I can take Tara everywhere I go and all I need is a hot room (cue the investment in a space heater) and my computer. (There is even a coordinating Spotify playlist)! Now, I don't have to loose my s%$& if I can't make it to class and even better it means I can add in a third day of class on my own time. I'm so excited to be able to practice while we are in Costa because I have yet to find a power yoga video that comes anywhere near the level of what my class is like. For those of you outside of the Boston area, if you are looking for an amazing class and an amazing instructor, look no further. This is it.
Tara has a 60 minute video available and a 75 minute as well. You can get both for $50 or they are $30 each. If you are in anyway bored with your workout or are just looking for more meaning, I cannot recommend these videos enough. I truly believe I am going to live another 10 years by doing this class, and I have Tara to thank for it!
You can read more about Tara on her personal blog and also view some of her beautiful photography here. Below is a little glimpse of The Love Offensive video series. I truly mean it when I say this will change your life. It certainly has changed mine! Xx
