5 Products That Will Extend The Life Of Your Wardrobe
You hear me talk a lot about buying pieces for you wardrobe that will "last a lifetime" and I realize that it's easy to say that something will stand the test of time as far as fashion goes, but how do you make those timeless purchases actually last through the decades? Here are five products that I use weekly which have really helped to keep my clothes looking new and fresh... one of them has actually saved every pair of shoes in my closet!
A few years ago, I discovered the magic that is Everlane cashmere and it's rare that a day goes by that I don't wear at least one of my beloved cashmere pieces. (I'm not kidding, I wear these every single night from October to June). This can mean exorbitant dry-cleaning bills and a breakdown of the piece itself from the chemicals in the cleaning OR you can save your clothes (and some $$$) by using this awesome wash from the Laundress. Every other weekend I hand wash my favorite pieces in the sink with this clothing shampoo, and then simply lay them on a towel to dry. It takes almost no effort and you are left with soft, clean cashmere and wool pieces that smell just as wonderful as they feel.
Of all these items, this one has to be my favorite! I used to hate when my new sweater or wool coat would pill from rubbing because it would instantly make the piece look old. I tried traditional pill removers and I found it to be so time consuming to remove each one individually. A few months ago this stone came up as a "suggested" item when I was checking out and I figured I'd give it a go. Once I tried it I was sold, and I really can't believe how much new life this simple item has brought to some of my oldest pieces.
Fels- Naptha Stain Remover
My boys love nothing more than a jersey from their favorite sports team and for some unknown reason they always seem to gravitate to white! I was talking to a friend about how I thought my son had ruined his favorite basketball jersey with some tomato sauce when she recommended this soap- apparently her grandmother swore by it. I was doubtful (the bar itself is less than 2 dollars) but then I saw with my own eyes just what an amazing stain remover this is. After the success with the jersey, I moved on to one of my favorite blouses that had a red wine stain on it from summer (obviously ;)) and within a few minutes that too was gone. Now, I have a bar of this in the kitchen for spills on the living room rug and another near the washer. Consider this your magic eraser for clothes... it really works that well!
Okay, these heel liners don't actually extend the life of your shoes per se, but they do keep you from sending them back or worse! throwing them away after a long, blister filled night and these liners will go down as one of my best discoveries- ever! These little silicone pads go in the back of your heel, on the inside of your shoe and they keep your shoes from rubbing when you walk. I'm not kidding when I say I now have a set of these in every single non-sneaker shoe that I own and I buy shoes a half a size up just to make sure I will have room for them. The downside is that your shoes do squeak a little when you walk (or maybe a lot) but the upside is that your feet feel like they are nestled in a pillow all night long and it also means no more blisters, even in new shoes!
Wrinkled clothes have to be cleaned and ironed more often than non-wrinkled one which simply means that the piece will last for shorter amount of time. The easy way to avoid this is to hang everything, but for many of us with small closest (ahem) that just isn't an option. I have been a huge fan of the folding board since my days working at a Banana Republic in college, where favorite task was folding all the shirts to create all those neat little piles you see when you walk in. Since we are tight on drawer space I decided to do he same for the boys and I and believe me, it really makes a difference when it comes to keeping your clothes from wrinkling. (Oh, and after a while it actually feels like you are meditating when you are folding a drawer's worth of clothes). The bonus is that your drawers look lovely and organized but it also helps you to see everything better. This helps to keep from reaching for the same thing over and over (something I am very guilty of) which ultimately extends the life of that item. It's a small thing that can really make a big difference!
Those are my five favorite products that I use to care for my clothes. I'm sure many of you have a few that you have come to know and love as well. I'm always open to trying new things and I would love to hear from you in the comments if you have any recommendations! Xx
