Our boys go to a school that requires them to wear blazers, button down shirts, and ties as part of their daily uniform. Because of this, I spend a LOT of time combing though J.Crew's sale section. It's actually shocking that just by waiting and taking the time to comb through the site I've been able to get beautiful ties for them, sometimes for less than 2 dollars. (!!!!) When you have boys that like to roll in the mud as much as mine, this can be a real money saver. Often I will click over to the women's section before I check out, just to "see", and it was there that I stumbled upon a gold metallic skirt that just so happened to be in my size AND was priced at less than twenty dollars. I don't usually impulse buy, but I think it was one of those times where it pushed me over free shipping so I figured that even if I didn't "need" a gold metallic skirt, it couldn't hurt to own one since it was practically free.
Well, that was last year and who would have known it but that gold skirt is actually one of my favorite pieces in my closet. I'm not kidding when I say that I wear it ALL the time. Wearing it as much as I do actually makes me think about other things in my closet and why I don't take them out more. I didn't realize how cost played into my daily dressing decisions, but now I see that I'm willing to wear this so much more because I know if something happened to it I wouldn't really have lost that much, but it's crazy to think that some of my more beautiful (and high end) pieces have to take a backseat for fear of ruining them. Certainly something to think about!
Okay, I digress. Back to the metallic skirt. Once would think that if you don't have an incredibly glamorous lifestyle that you wouldn't have a need for a gold lame skirt, but let me just say... that is wrong! I've worn this skirt dressed up to dinners with friends and to holiday parties, and equally as much with a striped tee or a graphic t-shirt and my beloved sneakers. It's the one thing I own that I can dress up just as easily as I can dress it down and because it's a little "out there" it also makes me look much more fashion forward than I am, and listen, there are days where that just feels good.
As luck would have it metallic skirts are trending HARD right now, and I can't think of a better piece to pick up for this holiday season because really you can wear it to everything. Throw on a chambray shirt and a pair of booties and you are ready to go for the office holiday party. Or you can pair it with a silk blouse and a pair of heels if you need to present as a little more conservative. For those weekend parties my favorite look is a black cashmere turtleneck, red lips, a metallic skirt and a pair of black strappy heels. The best part is metallic skirts look great with tights and considering that some of us actually got snow this morning, that can not be discounted!
The metallic skirt is simple, festive and elegant, and so SO versatile... really what more could you ask from a piece of clothing? Below I've rounded up the best metallic skirts from the web that are currently available (and in every price range) and a few inspiration images which show just how many ways this skirt can be worn. Mine is sadly sold out (and will go down as one of the best finds in history) but there are plenty of options still out there.
P.S. I'm also loving velvet for this upcoming holiday season! Be sure to check out this post in case you missed it. Xx
