Fall Must Have: The Topcoat

Fall Must Have: The Topcoat

One of the benefits of having a wardrobe that is on the smaller side (aka a capsule wardrobe) is that you really get to know what it is that you "need" each season. Obviously, need is a very loaded word in that there are very few of us who actually "need" another piece of clothing, so in this case I could also say that going into fall this year I really knew what I was lacking; and it turns out that what I was lacking was a topcoat.

A topcoat is technically a lightweight overcoat which really is just a transitional coat that can be worn with layers underneath in the the coldest months, and on it's own with a t-shirt on some of the warmer days (for us New Englanders that's all of Fall and Late Spring) and you style it like you would if you were wearing a blazer. I am one of those people who is always cold, no matter where I am, and as much as I love my blazers, I still usually layer a coat over them which can make you feel (and look like) the state puff marshmallow man.

For months, Ive had my eye on J. Crew's topcoat in serge wool (a very light but warm fabric) and last week when they had their big outerwear sale I ordered it in black just to "give it a try." Well, it arrived a few days ago and what can I say? It's perfect. It's absolutely what I was looking for and honestly it's even better than I imagined it would be. It's lightweight, it's fitted in all the right places, it's elegant but casual, and the best part is that it's warm.

Ever since it's arrival, it I've been pulling out some of my pieces for underneath that I would normally consider to be too lightweight for the early mornings that we have been having but are what you need to be wearing when it's all of a sudden 75 degrees in the afternoon (oh, Boston) because I know that I won't be freezing all day so long as I have my trusty topcoat with me. It has the added bonus of making you feel a little like a Brit, with its slim collar and structured shape and I find myself wearing it as much outdoors and I do indoors. I'm not going to lie, one of my new favorite things to do is ask my family where my topcoat is while using my best (awful) English accent. That's just what this coat does, it makes you feel a little more polished (regal) and also keeps you warm. It's not on sale right now, but knowing J.Crew it will again be marked down since they seem to have a sale going every weekend.

For those of you who are always chilly or are in and out of the car / office all day, this may be one you actually lacking in your own wardrobe. This is one piece of clothing that I truly didn't know I needed, but now I can't imagine my wardrobe without! Xx
