There has been something going on behind the scenes around here and I've been hesitant to talk about it in this space for fear of jinxing it (and honestly still am) but after mailing in some final paperwork today I feel like I can finally tell you all that the Anderson's are building our dream house in Costa Rica!!! As if that wasn't enough, I will actually be designing and building the house with the only man whose attention to detail is greater than mine... my DAD!!!
I know, right?????
So, how did this all come about? I can't get into specifics just yet but as you all know we consider Costa Rica to be our home away from home. We love that country so much and really can't think of anywhere else that we would want the boys to spend their childhood. Being down there is such a great counterbalance to our busy lives in the city and after our last trip we decided that we would be crazy not to live down there, at least part time. We have been very happy renting these past 15 years but as Costa is getting more and more popular the home rental prices are escalating quickly and availability is filling up fast. We almost couldn't find a place for our annual March trip and after much discussion we decided that there is no time better than the present to build our dream house.
Building in another country isn't exactly like building in America, where you can easily secure a mortgage with the right down payment. When you want to build or buy down there it is very much a cash up front operation so this is most definitely a project that will be done in stages. Our first step is to buy a plot of land and then once we finalize the plans with an architect we will break ground. The goal is to have our land purchased by the end of this Summer, and hopefully begin building by the end of next year. We will start with a main house and a pool and then eventually (and I mean way down the road) add one small guest house and then another with the idea being that those would be for the boys if/ when we retire down there. Obviously the land size will dictate what we can do, but for right now that's the plan. The goal is to have phase one done by my 40th birthday (I'm envisioning a kick ass girl's weekend down there) so we definitely have a few years to get things done. We will continue living in our current home and it will be remain our permanent residence, but eventually this will be the place we spend our Summers and holidays, hopefully with our extended family in tow.
Obviously, this has my design brain SPINNING and I can't believe that I may actually get to build a space from the ground up. Right now I'm loving the idea of a Spanish modern design, but depending on cost we may go with a more modern structure. I know I want a ton of indoor/ outdoor living spaces and a two story so we can have a few balconies to lounge and read on. The aesthetic I'm envisioning is what I like to call "clean bohemian" which really just means white walls and lots of wood, blues and greens. You really can't beat the lush landscaping down there (a tree will actually grow if you stick a branch in the ground) so I really just want it to be as open as we can to let all that natural beauty in. The furniture and accessories will be kept minimal, since this is a beach house after all, but I plan on making my mark using fun tile (hopefully floor to ceiling) in the kitchen and bathrooms. Of course, since the moment these discussions started I've been pinning away like crazy and below is a little of what I'm envisioning for our home. Obviously we can't have all the pretty things, but this is the general feel I'd love for the space.
Truly, I can't believe that this is actually happening! Last night we started to look at pieces of land and when we are down there in two weeks we will begin the process of narrowing them down with a Realtor. My Dad will join us for two weeks this Summer and by the end of his visit we should know where our home is going to be! Obviously, I will be writing about this as it happens and can't wait to share updates once the construction begins. It's going to be such a fun house and a it feels so meaningful knowing that I will be building what, for all intents and purposes, is our family home... I hope you will enjoy following along! I have a feeling this is going to be one margarita filled ride! xx
